This style originated in the early days of video games and computers, when hardware limitations made smooth graphics impossible. Because of that, characters and objects looked blocky. Over time, pixel art became a deliberate artistic style, not a limitation.
Types of Pixel Art: A Quick Checklist
ISOMETRY
Isometric: A top-down view that creates the illusion of 3D without perspective. All objects are drawn at an angle (usually 26.5 degrees), making it ideal for strategy and city-building sims
LINEAR
Linear: Emphasis on clear outlines of objects, one or more pixels thick.
DEETERING
Dithering: It’s not exactly a style, but a technique for creating gradients using a checkerboard pattern of alternating pixels of two colors. It creates the effect of soft shadows and texture on older monitors.
